Yumbe police probe killing of South Sudanese refugee in Bidi Bidi

Police in Yumbe district are investigating the gruesome murder of a refugee in Bidi Bidi Settlement.

The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Boni Charles, a resident of Village 18, Zone 5, Bidibidi Refugee Settlement in Yumbe District.

It is alleged that on the night of April 19, 2026, at about midnight, the deceased and his wife were inside their house when they heard a person knocking at the door.

According to the wife, after opening the door, the deceased was suddenly grabbed and pulled outside by the assailants, leading to a scuffle between him and the unidentified individuals, who were believed to be more than five in number.

She stated that the assailants, whom she could not identify, hit her husband with sticks, resulting in serious head injuries that appeared to have caused excessive bleeding and led to his death.

Despite the alarm she raised, no response was received from neighbours or community members.

She also alleged that the attackers were approximately six in number, one of whom was armed with a pistol.

They reportedly robbed her phone and fled the scene.

A team of officers from Yumbe Police Station, led by the officer in charge, visited the scene and found the body lying in a pool of blood with a deep injury at the back of his head.

Relevant statements were recorded from witnesses and attached to the case file VIDE YUMBE CRB 178/2026.

One live bullet from a pistol was recovered at the scene.

The body of the deceased was transported to Yumbe Regional Referral Hospital for a post-mortem.

The motive behind the attack remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
