Territorial police in Tororo have arrested a 41-year-old man accused of masterminding motorcycle thefts in Tororo and neighbouring districts, ending a manhunt that had lasted several weeks.

Eldadi Owere, a resident of Maliri parish in Mirikiti sub-county, was apprehended on April 15, 2026, in Mbale city after allegedly resuming his criminal activities while out on bail.

Johnson Moses Mugwe, the Bukedi South Region Police spokesperson, said the suspect had earlier appeared before the Tororo Chief Magistrate’s Court on charges of obtaining money by false pretence and theft.

"He was remanded to Morukatipe Government Prisons and from there he secured bail only to return to his roots," Mugwe said.

The suspect allegedly began masterminding motorcycle thefts shortly after his release, generating multiple cases in the region. He is now set to appear in court to answer charges of stealing a motor vehicle.

Police are calling on victims and complainants to come forward to the Central Police Station in Tororo for case management.

Mugwe warned the public to be cautious of people who pretend to be passengers or business dealers, only to steal or rob transport means.

He said police remain committed to rooting out the vice but emphasised the need for community cooperation.

"We must have a concerted effort with community members to act courteously, remain vigilant and alert, identify and report suspicious elements to nearby authorities," he said.
