Police have arrested two of their own officers in connection with the fatal shooting of a 33-year-old man during an early morning operation.
The suspects, identified as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Innocent Wagaba, the Officer in Charge of Buwunga Police Station, and Corporal Stephen Okwalinga, are currently in custody to assist investigations into the shooting of Alamanzani Mugoya, a resident of Nambale village in Buwunga subcounty.
According to Michael Kasadha, the regional police spokesperson for Busoga East, the incident occurred at about 4:40 am on April 4, 2026, as the officers attempted to arrest another suspect, Nasir Mugoya, on allegations of assault.
Kasadha explained that during the arrest, Mugoya allegedly raised an alarm that attracted relatives and residents from the surrounding area.
“The group reportedly confronted the officers while armed with pangas, sticks and stones in an attempt to rescue the suspect,” Kasadha said.
He added that in response to the perceived threat, the officers discharged firearms to disperse the crowd.
“Unfortunately, in the process, Mugoya was fatally shot,” Kasadha noted.
A team of detectives has since visited and documented the scene of the crime, recovering exhibits deemed to be of evidential value.
The deceased’s body was transported to Bugiri Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination as investigations continue.
Police say further inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
