Catholic Bishops' Easter message calls for reconciliation

The message, released by Joseph Antony Zziwa, chairman of the bishops’ conference, also stated that past elections recorded deaths, while some Ugandans were injured or traumatised, and some remain in detention due to their political beliefs.

The Uganda Episcopal Conference Easter message, released on Saturday, calls for national reconciliation and the release of any persons detained over political reasons.

In a pastoral message issued ahead of Easter celebrations on Sunday, April 5, the bishops appealed for unity, citing cases of "political division, economic hardships, and various forms of immorality."

The statement adds, “we appeal to the Government to consider the release of those detained for political reasons, and to establish a lasting mechanism for national reconciliation,” the bishops said.

The message, released by Joseph Antony Zziwa, chairman of the bishops’ conference, also stated that past elections recorded deaths, while some Ugandans were injured or traumatised, and some remain in detention due to their political beliefs.

The statement didn't give figures or details about the reported cases.

The incumbent President Yoweri Museveni emerged victorious with 71% and awaits swearing in next month (May).

The bishops urged citizens to use the Easter period as a time for repentance and reconciliation, drawing on their 2024 pastoral letter titled “The Truth Will Set You Free” which called for honesty and accountability as a foundation for national healing.

The Uganda Episcopal Conference (UEC) is the national assembly of the Catholic hierarchy in Uganda, established in 1960 and officially recognised by the Holy See in 1974. It serves as the local conference of bishops, aimed at promoting and coordinating the social and pastoral ministry of the Catholic Church in Uganda.

Beyond the political appeal, the bishops framed Easter as a moment for moral renewal, encouraging Christians to embrace values such as love, peace, patience and self-control, which they described as essential for rebuilding communities.

They also conveyed greetings from Pope Leo XIV, whom they met during their recent visit to Rome. The Pope commended the growth of the Catholic Church in Uganda, particularly the increasing number of clergy and the commitment of the laity, and extended his Apostolic Blessing to the country.

The bishops said Easter symbolises the victory of life over death and the triumph of light over darkness, urging Ugandans to translate that message into action by forgiving one another and fostering peace.

“As we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord, let us allow the power of His love to transform our hearts, families, communities, and nation,” the message read.

They further called on citizens to emulate the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi by becoming instruments of peace and working to build bridges in a divided society.

The Easter message comes at a time when Ugandans are celebrating the Easter holiday after what police called the most peaceful election.
