Uganda Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma has confirmed that police are hunting for a driver who fled the scene after a fatal crash that claimed the life of Kikuube district LC5 chairperson Peter Banura Araali.

In a statement on Saturday, April 4, 2026, Kituuma said the driver of a Toyota Hiace ran off immediately after the crash, although the vehicle was later recovered and impounded by police.

He added that efforts are ongoing to identify, trace and arrest the driver to assist with ongoing investigations.

Banura was killed in the incident that occurred on April 4, 2026.

According to district vice chairperson Vincent Opio Alpha, the accident happened at Butyamba village, near Kamusunsi trading centre in Kikuube town council, on the Hoima–Fort Portal road at around 7:20 pm.

Opio said Banura was knocked by a speeding Toyota Hiace, registration number UBQ 853E, which was heading towards Fort Portal.

When the tragic news broke, mourners, including politicians, gathered at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital to mourn Banura.

Kikuube resident district commissioner Godwin Angalia said that security agencies had already launched investigations into the incident.

Badru Mugabi, the Hoima city resident commissioner, revealed that by about 11:00 pm on Saturday, a postmortem on Banura’s body had not yet been carried out because no family member was present to witness it.

Peter Banura Araali, a son of Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Matayo Kyaligonza had been serving as the Kikuube district LC5 chairperson since 2021 and had retained his position in the 2026 general elections.

Banura is the second sitting district chairperson from the region to die in an accident, after former Hoima LC5 chairperson Kirungi Kadir, who perished in a car crash along the Hoima-Kampala road in March 2023.
