Voters in Gulu district have overhauled their Parliament representatives.

The Gulu District Woman Member of Parliament seat, currently occupied by Sharon Laker Balmoi, has shifted to National Resistance Movement (NRM) party candidate Phoebe Ayoo Obol.

Ayoo, who is the current speaker of Gulu District Council, has been serving as Gulu district woman councillor LC5 for Owor and Patiko sub-counties. She polled 13,111 votes to unseat Sharon Balmoi, who collected 2,448 votes.

Two-time parliamentary candidate Nancy Atimango, who contested the seat as an independent candidate, emerged in the third place with a total tally of 2,448 votes. In the fourth position is Filder Anyadwer Onek, an independent who garnered 267 votes.

Songstress Irene Lallam, who carried the National Unity Platform Party flag, polled just 196 votes to reserve the last position to Uganda People’s Congress Party Candidate Maureen Jones Atim, with a handful of 150 votes.

In the traditional Aswa County Member of Parliament seat, Democratic Party strongman Patrick Okello Onguti effectively ended the single-term reign of the National Resistance Movement party in the county, best known for producing eminent Opposition politicians since the 1996 elections.

Ogunti has dislodged incumbent Simon Peter Wokorach by 13,889 votes against 9,781 votes.

In the pack were former ambassador Johnson Olwar Agara, who ran as an independent with 707 votes, Forum for Democratic Change Party candidate James Oringa had 202 votes, while National Unity Platform Party candidate Walter Okot trailed with 174 votes.
