Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Gregory Mugisha Muntu, on Thursday, October 23, took time off his busy campaign schedule to interact with pupils of True Vine Nursery and Primary School.

At the time, the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) presidential candidate was travelling from Ruteete Town Council, where he had earlier held a rally. Residents had petitioned him over poor services, notably the lack of a hospital, bad roads, and water shortages.

Shortly after passing the signpost welcoming him to Mpeefu Ya Sande Town Council, Muntu’s convoy slowed down when a group of pupils, who appeared to be on their lunch break, caught his attention.

The children, dressed in chequered shirts and green shorts, were playing in the compound of a modest mud-and-wattle school.

Muntu stepped out of his car and toured the school as teachers and pupils looked on excitedly. The toddlers who had remained on the front porch broke into a song.

“We welcome our visitors, we are happy to receive you, we shall never forget you,” they sang in unison.

According to Samuel Kigoma, one of the teachers, the privately run school with a total of 120 pupils begins at baby class and stops at Primary Five.

ANT manifesto

While he did not engage in politics during the visit, Muntu’s ANT, in its 2026–31 manifesto, has pledged to strengthen education infrastructure with better classrooms, improved teacher pay, and deployment to hard-to-reach areas.

The party, founded in 2019, has also promised to equalise pay for arts and science teachers, support income diversification, reform government support schemes, increase university scholarships to 10,000, and expand vocational training for vulnerable groups, among other initiatives.

District profile

Kagadi District was established in 2016 when the former Kibaale District was divided to create the present-day Kakumiro and Kagadi districts. It is bordered by Ntoroko District to the west, Hoima District to the north, Kibaale to the east, and Kyenjojo to the south.
