National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, has urged Ugandan youth to use social media platforms such as TikTok to promote civic engagement and educate others about the importance of voting.

Speaking during a campaign rally at Bweyale Town Council in Kiryandongo district on Friday (October 24), Kyagulanyi said Uganda’s young and tech-savvy population holds the power to bring about peaceful political change through digital mobilisation and voter participation.

“My brothers and sisters, Uganda is full of young people,” Kyagulanyi, who has since Monday been traversing Bunyoro sub-region in his bid for the presidency, said.

“You are smart, informed, educated, and connected. Use your TikTok, your Facebook, and your WhatsApp to teach others why voting matters.”

He told supporters that young people should not limit social media to entertainment but use it to inspire civic responsibility and fight voter apathy.

“We are not only angry young people. We are informed, creative, and well-travelled young people. Use your platforms to show your parents, your friends, and your neighbours that voting is power.”

Kyagulanyi claimed that traditional media has been restricted from airing his campaign messages, saying digital platforms now provide a crucial space for citizens to exchange ideas freely.

“What I am saying to you, they will not allow you to hear on the radio or see on TV,” he said.

“That is why I am asking you to spread this message yourselves — use social media to open people’s eyes.”

Contrary to the NUP leader's claims, local news outlets regularly publish and broadcast the messages of the different candidates, including Kyagulanyi, as they crisscross the country.

Kyagulanyi, a two-time presidential candidate, urged young people to take the upcoming elections seriously, describing voting as the only peaceful means of transforming Uganda’s leadership.

“This time, we have a chance to redeem our future through our vote. Do not give up on the election. Come out and vote, and when you vote, stay at the polling station to ensure your voice is counted.”

Kyagulanyi’s rally in Kiryandongo was part of his ongoing campaign tour of the Bunyoro sub-region, where he has focused on mobilising youths and first-time voters to participate actively in the country’s political process.
