KATAKWI - Joint security forces in the Mt Moroto policing region have recovered 46 sheep that were allegedly stolen from Magoro in Katakwi District.
The animals, comprising 42 sheep and four lambs, were recovered during an intelligence-led operation conducted in Nabwal Sub-county, Napak District.
The operation followed a report of theft involving 47 sheep and three cows from Katakwi.
According to Mt Moroto Regional Police and Anti-Stock Theft Unit spokesperson Mike Longole, the recovered animals have since been handed back to their rightful owner, a senior police officer (name withheld).
The handover was witnessed by local leaders.

He warned livestock thieves that security forces had intensified operations against the vice and would continue pursuing suspects involved in animal theft.
The recovery adds to ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb livestock theft, particularly in Karamoja sub-region and neighbouring areas where cattle rustling and animal theft have remained a security concern.
Nationally, crime statistics from the Uganda Police Force indicate that theft remains the most reported offence, accounting for 28 percent of all cases reported.
Police recorded 7,208 cases of animal thefts in 2025, compared to 7,222 cases in 2024.
According to the 2025 Police Annual Crime Report, 9,381 animals were reported stolen during the year. Of these, 4,347 animals were recovered, while 5,034 remained missing.
