The Makindye Chief Magistrates Court has remanded four men to Luzira Prison on charges of aggravated robbery and the subsequent murder of SC Villa football captain David Owori.

The accused persons appeared before Makindye Chief Magistrate Sarah Basemera on Friday, August 21st, where charges arising from the death of Owori were read to them in three separate case files.

The charges are aggravated robbery, contrary to sections 266 and 267(1)(b) and (2) of the Penal Code Act, Cap. 128 and murder, contrary to sections 171 and 172 of the Penal Code Act, Cap. 128.

Prosecution alleges that on August 4, 2026, at Dubai Zone in Makindye Division, Kampala District, Ahumuza, Munguci, Ssegawa, Lubega and other persons still at large robbed Owori of two mobile phones and a bag containing personal effects.

Court also heard that at, or immediately before or after, the alleged robbery, the group caused the death of Owori.

On the second count, the prosecution alleges that the four accused persons and others still at large, on the same date and at the same location, unlawfully killed Owori with malice aforethought.

The prosecution alleges that the accused persons acted together with other suspects who have not yet been apprehended.

However, following the murder of football star Owori, police arrested 17 suspects, including phone dealers and relatives of those who were arraigned before court on Friday.

The suspects were reportedly screened until preliminary investigations allegedly zeroed in on the four men who have been charged.

Cour on Friday also heard that the accused persons, on August 4, 2026, at Nabisaalu Zone, Makindye Division in Kampala District, robbed a Congolese national, Dr Jackson Ombeni, of his mobile phone, an iPhone 11 Pro Max, blue in colour, USD 90 and a black handbag containing a Congolese national identity card.

Police listed other items in the bag as a DRC medical card, a DRC temporary passport, an English syllabus level two book, a passport-size photograph, a silver watch and other documents containing English notes, all valued at sh1,065,500.

The prosecution alleges that immediately before or after the time of the said robbery, the four accused persons used a deadly weapon, described as a paver, to hit Dr Ombeni.

In the third case file, only two accused persons have been implicated, namely Arafat Magumba and David Ahumuza.

They were separately charged with aggravated robbery in connection with an alleged robbery involving Edrisa Mugisha Edrisa, whom they reportedly robbed of his Tecno phone after hitting him with a piece of wood.

The Chief Magistrate informed the accused persons that all the charges before her court are capital in nature and, therefore, she lacks jurisdiction to try them.

As a result, the group were not required to enter a plea to the substantive charges at this stage. They were instead informed of the allegations against them and remanded as the case proceeds through the appropriate court process.

They were also informed that they have a right to apply for bail in the High Court immediately.

State Attorney Jemima Acheingo informed court that investigations are still ongoing and asked the court to adjourn the case for mention.

After the proceedings, the four accused persons were remanded to Luzira Prison until September 10, 2026, when they are expected to return to court as investigations continue.
