THE presidential adviser on defence, Gen. Salim Saleh, has called for the promotion of food security by practising modernised farming.
“There is no food security especially in the rural areas. We cannot promote food security through isolated farming,†Saleh said.
He was speaking during the passing out of 14 tractor operators of East Mengo Growers Cooperative Union, who had completed two weeks of training at Nakanyonyi Day and Boarding School in Mukono district on Thursday.
The ceremony, where the trainees displayed their ploughing skills on the school farm, was presided over by the managing director of National Enterprise Corporation, Col. Fred Mwesigye.
He urged the cooperative to hire out the tractors to farmers in order to promote and modernise agriculture.
Mwesigye said the corporation would establish maintenanceworkshops for the tractors.
The trainees were drawn from Nakaseke, Luweero, Mukono and Kayunga districts, where the cooperative operates.
