Sarah Wasagali Kanabi is the only female contestant for the Mbale Municipality seat. Wasagali is councillor for University and Nkoma Wards in Mbale and female warden for the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU).
The 37-year-old said, “I am going to build on what Wapa did and lobby for more projects for the people of Mbale Municipality.â€
“I am also looking beyond an ordinary Member of Parliament. I expect to rise to greater heights when elected MP,†she said.
Wasagali is on the individual merit ticket under the Movement System.
“I have been inspired by the people’s confidence in me.
They have seen how I perform and asked me to represent them in parliament,†she explained inside her husband’s workshop in Mbale town.
As a political representative for University and Nkoma wards, Wasagali who said she has lobbied for a number of projects for her people wants to initiate the process of amending some of the laws and removing some of the outdated ones.
She boasts of support from the women, the Moslem community and from her wards of Nkoma and University where she is most popular.
Wasagali was born on October 30, 1967 to a peasant family in Buhugu sub-county, Sironko district. She went to Buhugu Primary School and North Road Primary School.
The mother of four holds a Masters in Economic Policy and Planning from Makerere University, BA Social Science degree from Makerere, a Postgraduate diploma in education obtained from IUIU and a Postgraduate diploma in Kiswahili obtained in 1997 at the same university.
She briefly taught at Kibuli Secondary School and Bashir High School.
“While teaching, I was appointed female warden at IUIU. I am still the warden and also lecture in the Department of Economics,†she said.
Wasagali joined the political leadership of Mbale in 1998 when she was elected councillor.
“By nature, man is a political animal. I have that political interest. I have been in politics since my childhood. I was a student leader right from primary. I am not new in politics.â€
At Makerere University in 1990, Wasagali was on Guild Representative Council (GRC) for CCE Hall and Deputy Sports Secretary for the same hall.
She also represented Makerere University as a delegate to the Uganda National Students Association.
Today, she is a member of the board of governors Mbale Secondary School, Nkoma Secondary School, Hamudani Girls High School and a member of the board of directors of the Eastern Private Sector Development Centre Limited. She is married to Mbale businessman Hatibu Kanabi.
