With the aim of growing volleyball in the Teso sub‑region, the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) is conducting a five‑day Capacity Building Coaching and Refereeing Course at Kumi Township Primary School from January 5–10, 2026.
The program marks a major milestone in the development of volleyball in the area.
Patrick Okanya, USSSA’s head of capacity building, explained that the training builds on similar initiatives held across the country.
“The purpose of this training is to equip both teachers and learners with skills. We want students to acquire these abilities while they are still young,” Okanya said.
He emphasized that the course focuses on modern coaching approaches, including leadership, coaching methodologies, and player development.
“These aspects are critical if we want to grow volleyball, and grassroots coaches are key stakeholders in that process,” he added.
Among the participants was Stella Akello, one of the female trainees, who shared her motivation:
“I came here to learn more about volleyball refereeing. I love the sport, and after seeing women officiating, I admired them and decided to come here to learn and understand what is expected in coaching and refereeing.”
Course coordinator Joseph Opio Ekodeu expressed appreciation for the strong turnout of teachers, describing it as a clear demonstration of commitment to professional growth and volleyball development. He also thanked Kumi District Local Government and Kumi Municipality for their support, noting that their backing was instrumental in making the training possible.
USSSA president Justus Mugisha reiterated the association’s long‑term vision: by 2030, USSSA aims to have trained more than 30,000 participants in coaching and refereeing across Uganda.
