Uganda's wheelchair rugby fraternity has launched preparations for the country's first-ever national championship, with players from across the country being called to training ahead of the August event.

Weekly training sessions are now underway at Makerere University Basketball Court, drawing athletes from Kampala, Wakiso, and Gulu, the three clubs currently active in the sport.

The championship, scheduled for August 3–7 at the Lugogo Indoor Arena, is set to receive an international boost with the participation of a top Welsh wheelchair rugby club. The visit follows a partnership agreement between the Uganda Wheelchair Rugby Federation and the Welsh side, aimed at supporting the sport's growth in Uganda.

Beyond competition, the visiting team will provide equipment support, conduct training programmes for local coaches, referees, and officials, and offer guidance on the maintenance and management of specialised wheelchair rugby gear.

Coaches have already begun introducing players to the fundamentals, focusing on ball handling, passing, wheelchair movement, and positioning as they work to build a competitive squad. The early start is seen as essential given the sport's technical demands and the limited exposure many players have had to the game.

Federation officials say the preparations will also serve as a talent identification programme for the national team ahead of the African Zone qualifiers, scheduled for South Africa next year.

Despite the growing excitement, administrators acknowledge persistent challenges, including limited access to specialised wheelchairs, inadequate training equipment, and a shortage of disability-friendly sports facilities.

The inaugural championship marks a significant milestone in the expansion of adaptive sports in Uganda.
