Teso sub-region excited as Soroti, Katakwi to host National Rally Championship

Motorsport fans in the Teso sub-region are excited following the approval of Soroti and Katakwi districts as the hosts of Round 4 of the National Rally Championship (NRC) on the July 24-25, 2026 season calendar.

The event, organised by the Eastern Motor Club and the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU), is set to feature over 30 elite rally crews navigating fresh, rugged terrain.

"Teso sub-region is our destination for the National Rally Championship, and it will be the first of its kind to be hosted in the area," said Kees Kagolo, Eastern Motor Club president.

Kagolo, while speaking during the consultative meeting held at Soroti City headquarters last Friday, acknowledged support from State Minister of Sports Peter Ogwang, who he said is one of the key people enabling FMU to extend the rally route to Teso region, majorly in Soroti and Katakwi districts.

"We are happy that we are opening up the sport to a new area. Eastern Motor Club speaks for itself, so we have a responsibility to take the sport to all parts of eastern Uganda," Kagolo added.

He called upon fans, especially those coming from various sub-counties, to follow all the safety measures put in place. "We all want to enjoy a safe rally, and it can only be possible if they behave well," he said.

The rally has secured full endorsement from district and city leaders. Katakwi LC5 Chairman Geoffrey Omolo applauded Eastern Motor Club for identifying Katakwi as one of the districts in Teso sub-region to benefit from such a prestigious event.

"Katakwi is ready to host the National Rally Championship. All local medical facilities and trauma units are on high alert, and security teams will be deployed along the route corridors," Omolo said.

According to Omolo, massive mobilisation and awareness campaigns are ongoing in areas where the stages will pass.

"We have inspected all roads in Katakwi and there are no potholes, which means it will be either a good car or a good driver to be the champion in Katakwi. So no excuses concerning the routes," he added.

Simon Opolot, Soroti City sports officer, is optimistic that hosting the championship in the area is an avenue for the community.

"All those big guys are going to be here and we shall watch them. But when those cars are here, you must ensure safety. The cars run faster than a bullet, so keep a distance and let us enjoy," Opolot warned, emphasizing the importance of public safety during the high-speed event.
