Team Matooke set sights on the Independence Marathon in Entebbe

Fresh from the Sydney Marathon, Team Matooke have launched into spirited preparations for the Independence Marathon on October 9.


Running under the Team Matooke banner, the group will also mark 130 years since the very first marathon took place in Athens, Greece.


Spyridon Louis won the Inaugural Run (1896) – the first modern Olympic marathon in Athens, completing a 40-kilometre dirt course in 2 hours, 58 minutes, and 50 seconds.


Eight members of Matooke: Martin Makumbi, Betty Makumbi, Cde. Micheal, Ekky, Julie Bataringaya, Jackie Lutaaya, Fred Lutaaya, Stephen Mugabe, Brian Ngungiri, Alvin Mbugua and Jantine were part of over 40,000 runners from over 140 countries who conquered the TCS Sydney Marathon.

 

Now, the entire team is preparing for the Independence Marathon, which will finish at Lake Victoria Primary School in Entebbe. Their journey begins on September 13 with a monthly run from Quality Village Lubowa to Santa Maria Hotel in Entebbe.


The 42km race will start at 6.30am at the Independence Monument in Kampala, the 21km race will begin at the Voice Mall in Bwebajja at 7.00am, and the 10km runners will start at Lake Victoria Primary School in Entebbe.
