Murungi storms into U20 800m semifinals with fastest qualifying time

Uganda’s Shafeck Murungi underlined his medal credentials after clocking the fastest qualifying time in the men’s 800m at the ongoing World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA.

The teenager produced a commanding performance in heat two, crossing the finish line in 1:46.46 to not only qualify comfortably for the semifinals but also register a new personal best.

Murungi’s impressive run placed him at the top of the overall qualifiers, boosting Uganda’s hopes of securing another medal at the global junior championships.

The Ugandan will return to the track on Saturday morning for the first semifinal, where he will aim to book a place in the final and move one step closer to the podium.

After his victory, an upbeat Murungi credited his performance to thorough preparation, having spent more than a month training in Kaptagat, Kenya—one of the world’s most renowned high-altitude training bases and home to several global distance-running champions.

“My preparation was good. I spent over a month in Kaptagat, and you know it is the home of world champions. I was very prepared,” Murungi said.

The youngster said he executed his race plan perfectly by staying composed and maintaining his intended pace throughout the heat.

“I had to make sure I maintained my target pace. My plan is to win a medal for my country,” he added.
