The two-legged Clash of the Titans Golf Tournament at the Uganda Golf Club and Entebbe Club will continue to invest in the development of the sport in high schools around the country.
This was disclosed by golfer Henry Nsubuga, head of the organising committee for the 5th edition of the championship, which will start at the Uganda Golf Club on September 12 before returning to Entebbe on October 2.
Addressing the press at the tournament’s launch at Entebbe Club on Friday, Nsubuga said the money raised is intended to be reinvested in the schools.
Nuwagaba said the idea of different groups from various years and generations coming together really helped them form teams that have started getting golf gear for students.
“It all kicked off as the Clash of Titans WhatsApp group to get organised for the tournament. But even after the tournament, we kept organising and thought we could build on what our Clash of Titans team did and also help out the students at our school. We're already seeing the positive results of this whole initiative,” Nuwagaba stated.
Nsubuga noted that as more sponsors join, they envision it becoming a quarterly event, featuring various tournaments that allow schools to qualify for a grand finale after having competed throughout the year to earn their spot. This year’s event will attract alums from 21 schools, including SMACK, Namilyango, Ntare School, MVARA, Ndejje SS, Budo, Ombaci College, Kigezi High School, Nabumali, Bweranyagi Girls, Gayaza High School, Kigezi High School, Namasagali, U.M SSS Namugongo, Jinja College, Old Kampala SS, among others. Nekusa, whose company has supported the event from the onset, said that they were proud to back a tournament that unites people from various walks of life.
“A key aspect of our health insurance offerings includes promoting wellness to ensure clients lead healthy lives. Golf is a sport that naturally promotes wellness, and anything that helps people avoid the hospital is a positive activity,” Mindru said.
She said the brand is fully committed to participating in this event and aims to encourage more individuals to take up the sport next season. Two-time champions St. Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK) will be the team to beat in the annual event.
The event is supported by an array of sponsors, including Hima, Jubilee Insurance, Kenya Airways, Bugiri Sugar, MTN MOMO, Johnnie Walker, Wakefield, CFAO Mobility, Farmers Choice, Balambuli Kweigate Coffee, I&M Bank, among others.
