Bugema University has embarked on an intensive residential training program as preparations heighten for the 20th Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) National Games, set to take place from December 18–23 at Uganda Christian University (UCU) in Mukono.
The camp, which began last week, has confined 80 athletes to a focused regimen designed to sharpen their skills, resilience, and competitive edge ahead of the highly anticipated event.
In last year’s AUUS Games, Bugema competed in four disciplines football, basketball, volleyball, and athletics. This season, the university has expanded its participation to six, adding woodball and netball. The move reflects Bugema’s ambition to broaden its impact and strengthen its presence at the national stage.
Specioza Nyanzi Rugwiza, Dean of Students and head of the delegation to UCU, expressed confidence in the team’s preparations. “All the athletes are currently engaged in residential training. We will not entertain excuses related to logistics. The university will take full responsibility for accommodation, feeding, and other necessities until the games conclude,” Rugwiza affirmed.
She also praised the football team’s strong showing in the ongoing Pepsi University Football League (UFL), where they remain unbeaten with one win and two draws from three matches in Group B. The team sits third with five points, just behind Bishop Stuart University (six points) and Muteesa I Royal University (nine points).
Despite financial challenges, Rugwiza emphasized Bugema’s commitment to sports development. “We are grappling with financial constraints; otherwise, we would gladly participate in more than ten disciplines. Nonetheless, we appreciate the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Israel Kafeero, for his unwavering support. Even with limited resources, Bugema University consistently takes part in nearly all tournaments,” she said.
In a motivational message to the athletes, Rugwiza urged them to combine faith with effort and confidence. “Put God first, give your best at UCU, believe in your abilities, and play with the mindset that you are showcasing your talents before scouts and clubs searching for exceptional players,” she advised.
