A primary school teacher is among the over 170 other Ugandans plotting to unseat President Yoweri Museveni come the 2026 General Election.

Kiagwenda district-based teacher Andrew Kajungu picked nomination forms from the Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala on Monday, August 18, 2025.

Kajungu joins several individuals, including Bobi Wine aka Kyagulanyi Ssentamu of the National Unity Platform, Nobert Mao of the Democratic Party and Nandala Mafabi of the Forum for Democratic Change, among others, who have already expressed interest in the presidency and picked nomination forms.

However, one has to fulfil certain conditions before their name appears on the final ballot. To qualify, contenders must secure voter endorsements in 98 districts (100 signatures per district), pay a shillings 20 million non-refundable fee, and meet vetting criteria.

The nomination window closes September 24, setting the stage for a fiercely contested race.

Kajungu, 39, announced his bid to “awaken Uganda” and prioritise education reform.

He criticised corruption, declaring, “I’ll nationalise assets acquired through graft.”

His campaign aims to highlight teachers’ roles and promote an inclusive, non-discriminatory society.

Aspirant returns forms

In a related development, Moses Byamugisha, once a Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential hopeful, stunned observers by returning nomination forms claiming to have secured the required 100 signatures per district across 100 districts.

“I need the EC to clear me and provide bank details for the shillings 20 million fee,” he said, vowing to replicate the energy of street protests to unseat Museveni.
