NYOYA - The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General, Richard Todwong, has announced the arrest of several district party officials over alleged misuse of funds designated for grassroots electoral activities, warning that additional arrests are likely as investigations expand.
Speaking to journalists at his country home in Nwoya District on Saturday, ahead of the July 28 LC I Chairperson elections, Todwong confirmed that the party had already moved against officials accused of diverting money sent to districts to support Village Barazas and facilitate NRM flag bearers.
“We have arrested quite a number, and we are still investigating others,” Todwong said. “We sent money to the district offices, but some district officials misused these funds. Reports are still coming in because the circular from the Secretariat clearly spelt out how the money was to be distributed to the villages and to our flag bearers.”
He stressed that the NRM would not tolerate financial misconduct by party leaders, noting that investigations remain active as more complaints reach the Secretariat from across the country.
Todwong also expressed satisfaction with the recently concluded Village Women Council elections, saying NRM candidates had secured a commanding victory nationwide.
“From the reports we are receiving, our performance stands between 85 and 92 percent. The few who won were mainly independents and a small number from other political parties, but the overwhelming majority belong to the NRM,” he said.
He stressed that the NRM would not tolerate financial misconduct by party leaders, noting that investigations remain active as more complaints reach the Secretariat from across the country.

The Secretary General credited the party’s strong showing to its extensive grassroots mobilisation structure, noting that elected village leaders had campaigned effectively for NRM candidates and would now spearhead mobilisation efforts for the LC I Chairperson elections set for Tuesday, July 28.
He further cautioned party leaders against backing independent candidates, promising disciplinary measures against anyone found mobilising against officially endorsed NRM flag bearers.
“As a party, we are focusing on supporting our flag bearers. We do not expect any leader to mobilise support against a flag bearer. The party is serious about this, and there will be sanctions against those who undermine our candidates,” Todwong warned.
He called on all NRM supporters to turn out and vote for the party’s official LC I Chairperson candidates, describing the village elections as vital to strengthening grassroots leadership and advancing the party’s campaign against household poverty.
