BUTAMBALA - President Yoweri Museveni is today December 29, 2025, expected to resume re-election campaigns in the neighbouring districts of Butambala and Mpigi after the Christmas break.

Museveni, who took a five-day break to celebrate Christmas, is campaigning for his seventh elected term in office next year on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party ticket.

Butambala and Mpigi are some of the districts in the central region where his chief rival, Robert Kyagulanyi of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, fared well in the last general election of 2021.

Kyagulanyi garnered 26,806 (73.27%) votes in Butambala while Museveni got 9,379 (25.63%). In Mpigi, Kyagulanyi polled 60,815 (72.07%) votes while Museveni received 22, 333 (26.47%).

NUP also made a political statement in the local government election of that year in both districts despite being the new kid on the block, having been formed in July 2020.
The LC5 seats were among those it grabbed in both districts.

Butambala was carved out of Mpigi district to bring services closer to the people and started operating in July 2010.

The majority of people in both districts live in rural areas and depend on agriculture (subsistence).

Museveni, who has led Uganda uninterrupted since January 1986, is campaigning under the theme: “Protecting the Gains, Making a Qualitative Leap into High Middle-Income Status.”

The theme focuses on safeguarding achievements over the past 39 years, such as peace and development, while aiming to propel Uganda to high middle-income status.

Other gains include wealth creation initiatives, job opportunities, service delivery, market access, as well as East African political federation.
