The Uganda Police say they have arrested a woman suspected to have been in a hotel room with Dr John Spire Kiggundu before he was discovered dead in the room on Sunday, June 22, 2025.

Kiggundu, the elder brother of satirical cartoonist and academic Dr Spire Ssentongo, was a celebrated gynaecologist and fertility specialist. He was the founder and executive director of Henrob Laparoscopy Hospital in Zzana on Entebbe Road.

Kampala metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, confirmed the arrest of the woman and said she was being detained on a general inquiries file that was opened up by Police and that she had given Police all the information they wanted.

“She gave us all the information we wanted, we recorded her statement, and we have now forwarded the file to the Resident State Attorney (RSA) for perusal and advice. Since this was a general inquiry file, we didn’t attach a charge sheet when we were sending it. We wanted the RSA to guide us, if the lady has any case to answer, and they guide us on what charges to prefer,” Onyango said.

He said they were waiting for advice from the RSA and to determine the way forward.

Kiggundu's body was recovered from a hotel room in Kitende, where he had allegedly booked himself in. According to preliminary Police investigations, the doctor checked in at the lodge and told the attendants he would be resting for a short while.

However, after entering his room, he did not lock the door, which the Police say was an indication he was expecting someone.

One of the lodge attendants reportedly checked on him in the room and found him sleeping while putting on boxers.

However, at about 10:00am, when they went back to the room to see whether he had checked out, they found him still sleeping, prompting them to call officers from Kajjansi Police Station.

Upon arrival in his room, Police found Kiggundu dead, but they recovered $1,370, shillings 93,000, a phone tablet, 2 used HIV test kits, keys for his car that was packed outside, an open water bottle, an open minute maid (juice) bottle all half drunk and Panadol extra tablets.

When they checked the CCTV footage at the hotel, a woman was seen checking out of the deceased's room that night using the back door.

Police obtained his call logs, which they used to track down the woman in question.
