Police have recovered an abandoned firearm that was discovered hidden in the bush by a resident in Kiboga district.

The gun, found on August 18 at Temanakali “A” (Kituma), Matangi Parish, Bukomero Sub-County, was wrapped in a rotten white sack and contained two live rounds of ammunition.

According to Racheal Kawala, the Wamala Regional Police spokesperson, the firearm was discovered by a woman identified as Asha Baluka, who was clearing a bush using a panga when she stumbled upon the sack.

“She immediately informed the area chairperson, who later alerted police. Our officers responded to the scene and recovered the firearm, which was wrapped in a rotten sack,” Kawala said.

She explained that the serial number of the gun could not be established as it was heavily rusted, suggesting it may have been hidden for a long time.

“Efforts are underway to establish the type and source of the firearm, and to have suspects identified, arrested, and brought to book,” Kawala added.

Police said investigations are ongoing as they work to trace the origins of the weapon.
