GOMBA - Tuesday's village council elections turned into a bloody tragedy in Kiziba village, Gomba District, forcing authorities to cancel the village chairperson election following a horrific machete attack on an aspirant and his supporters.

Lauben Muhabuzi, who was contesting for the village chairperson seat under the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket, is currently fighting for his life after he was hacked by an unidentified assailant and left nursing deep wounds and severe trauma.

The targeted attack also claimed Muhabuzi's associate, identified as Ddiriisa Nsubuga. Three other people sustained major injuries during the chaotic onslaught.

Locals rushed the survivors to Kanoni Health Centre IV, where medical teams battled to stabilise them.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased was conveyed to the Gombe Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

The Electoral Commission suspended the voting exercise indefinitely, and security personnel were deployed in the area to prevent any potential violence.

According to the Katonga regional police spokesperson, the police have initiated a manhunt for the individuals involved in the incident. They urge residents to remain calm while the investigations are ongoing.
