Hundreds attend Ash Wednesday Masses, as Lent begins

Hundreds filled the pews in Christ the King Church, Kampala, for the 6:20am and 7am Masses on Ash Wednesday to celebrate a day when Christians in the world begin 40 days of lent.
The Parish Priest, Msgr Gerald Kalumba, led a group of laity during the Mass.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a 40-day penitential season leading to Easter Sunday.
In his homily, Msgr Gerald Kalumba reminded the congregation of the importance of fasting, giving alms, and prayer during the Lenten season.
He said that “Ash Wednesday is an important day for us, it marks the first day of fasting, repentance, prayer and self-control.”
Christians are encouraged to fast what they cherish most and not what is scarce.
Kalumba said, "We can sacrifice things, do charity, fasting, repent and sacrifice to recognise what Christ has done for us."
