Veteran Ugandan playwright, actor and author Alex Mukulu has died at the age of 72, with the news on Saturday (August 15) sparking an outpouring of tributes across the entertainment industry.
His vast stage work spanned over three decades, with his first play 'Muzukulu wa Kabangala' produced in 1977 and last one 'The People's President' produced in 2022.
Mukulu's 'Journey to Self-Realization' was performed at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Kampala in 2007.
He also authored a book, '30 Years of Bananas', which was originally published in 1993, and a play of the same title was among his most prominent stage works.

Mukulu was born in 1954 in Misebe, Ssingo county to Paulo Kayizi Lugaizi and Victoria Ndagire, daughter of Prince Yokana Kimbugwe of Lungujja.
After completing his secondary school studies at Kololo Secondary School in Kampala, he studied Film and Drama at Makerere University, paving the way for what would become an illustrious career in the industry.
News of Mukulu's death got fans paying glowing tribute to "a giant of Ugandan theatre, storytelling and the creative arts".
