The bold fashion week launches with a meet & greet

After a five-year hiatus, Kampala’s fashion scene is getting a much-needed revival, with Bold Fashion Week promising to bring designers, creatives and fashion enthusiasts back together and restore the city’s place on the regional fashion map.

Fashion is a big deal wherever you go, with all the glitz and glamour that comes with it and guests going the extra mile to make a glittering impression. Unfortunately, Kampala has been missing that, especially since the last real Fashion Week in 2019, before COVID-19.

But the good times are back, if the official launch of Bold Fashion Week on Wednesday night was anything to go by. It wasn’t extravagant — that would have been overkill. It was simple and tasteful, and served as a fitting entry point for what the fashion industry has been missing.

Held at Bold in Africa’s new offices in Bugolobi, the evening was small and intimate. There was very little formality, with just a couple of speeches from Managing Director and Co-founder Nunu Mugyenyi and representatives from the sponsors. There was also a powerful poem performed by Nunu Butare.

It will probably take some time before the Ugandan fashion industry gets its groove back, and before the extravagance and the ‘fashion royalty’ return. But kudos to Bold for giving it a kick-start.

The actual fashion showcase will take place on Friday at Motiv in Bugolobi, and will feature at least 10 designers, including Yemi Shoyemi from Nigeria. Other featured designers are Axarya, Discreet Street x Local, Good Fibre, Joan Jade, Kifahari, Kwesh, Lamara, Ofumbi, and Shurea Yasmin.
