TWENTY-three people have picked presidential nomination forms to run in next year’s election.

The latest to pick the forms yesterday was the People’s Progressive Party presidential candidate, Jaberi Bidandi Ssali.

“The thuggery in the NRM primary elections has taught us a lot and acted as an eye opener. We have learnt the antics of vote rigging, ballot stuffing and open bribery,” Bidandi told journalists.

He said he was sure of winning next year’s presidential elections because he tested the “waters” when he served as local government minister for 14 years.

“Local government is one of the hardest ministries to handle, only next to the President’s office,” Bidandi said.

The Electoral Commission assistant public relations officer, Paul Bukenya, said six independent candidates had picked the forms.

They are Gideon Tugume, Lutara Charles Opiyo, Abbey Freeman, Remmy Galo Githo, Drake Ssebunya and Joseph Sserwadda.

Other parties that have picked the forms are Forum for Integrity in Leadership, People’s United Movement, Uganda People’s Party, Democratic Party Uganda, Farmers Party of Uganda, and National Youth Revolutionary Organisation.

Others are the National Peasant Party, National Convention for Democracy, Uganda Economic Party, National Unity Reconciliation, Beti Kamya’s Uganda Federal Alliance and the Movement Volunteers Mobilisation Organisation.

The other is Ecological Party of Uganda.

Bukenya noted that there are 38 registered political parties in Uganda.

The nomination dates for presidential and parliamentary candidates are October 25 and 26. The presidential aspirants will be nominated at the commission’s head offices in Kampala and parliamentary candidates at the district headquarters.

According to the Electoral Commission, the candidates must pay nomination fees of sh8m, collect 100 signatures from at least 75 districts and hand in three passport size photos and certified copies of academic papers.

The commission requires the aspirants to only carry receipts as proof of payment and submit a list of 100 supporters in advance for verification.

Nominated presidential aspirants will receive facilitation of sh20m, a car and Police escorts. If a candidate withdraws from the race within 30 days after nomination, such a candidate shall refund the money.

Only two vehicles with Police stickers will be allowed during nominations. They are to carry no more than 10 people each.

To be eligible for the presidential and parliamentary seats, a candidate must be a citizen of Uganda, a registered voter and have at least an A’level certificate or its equivalent.

Civil servants wishing to join the race will be required to submit copies of their resignation letter as well, which should have been tendered in 90 days before.
