Lawyer Denis Okello Oweka says he has officially withdrawn from the Gulu City mayoral race, cutting the number of candidates to five.
Oweka submitted his withdrawal letter on December 23, 2025, with the support of all his nominators, seconders, and supporters.
Speaking to New Vision Online, Oweka said the decision followed wide consultations with his family and supporters, who unanimously agreed.
He said he will now focus on his business ventures over the next five years.
The race initially attracted six contenders, including incumbent mayor Alfred Okwonga of the National Resistance Movement, independent candidates Julius Labejja Gunya, Jonathan Okello Oxy, Patrick Obonyo and Anthony Mark Obonyo.
Gulu City Returning Officer Mike Juko confirmed receiving Oweka’s withdrawal letter, which cited personal interests as the reason for his decision.
Meanwhile, the mayoral contest is tightening following the formation of an Opposition coalition.
The coalition, chaired by Christopher Achire Obema, has endorsed Anthony Mark Obonyo as its sole candidate, vowing to defeat all NRM candidates across the Acholi region.
The Electoral Commission has scheduled elections for district and city chairpersons, Lord mayor, mayors, and councillors for January 22, 2026.
