Ceylon Lions knew they could not afford to let this opportunity slip and, in the end, they delivered with authority.

Perry Wazombe scored 33 runs and claimed a game-best four wickets as Ceylon secured their first win of the season in the CU Men 50 Overs League, defeating JACC by 118 runs in Jinja.

Wazombe deservedly earned the player-of-the-match award, but this was a strong collective display from the Lions, who had lost their opening two matches before finally getting off the mark on Sunday.

Charles Musemeza top-scored with 44 off 95 balls, while Mathew Musinguzi added an unbeaten 36 as the Lions were bowled out for 180 in 44.3 overs.

Isae Niyomugabo and Abu Seguya contributed 12 and 10 runs, respectively.

In reply, JACC collapsed under pressure. Patel Abhay and Ramathan Ochimi managed 21 and 11 runs respectively, as the hosts were bowled out for just 62 in 24.2 overs. Kenneth Waiswa, who had earlier taken a team-best 4/32 in eight overs, was dismissed for four as the chase quickly unravelled.

Wazombe led the dismantling of JACC’s batting line-up, with Musinguzi providing solid support with figures of 3/13 in 5.2 overs.

The defeat leaves JACC winless this season, a position they share with Aboojo, who also suffered defeat to Mukono by 78 runs in the day’s other match.

Fahad Mutagana was instrumental in Mukono’s first win of the campaign, scoring 37 runs and taking 5/40 in 10 overs.

Ronald Lutaaya led all scorers with a fluent 67 off as many balls, while Robert Ajuna, Gerald Olipa and Musa Ramathan added 33, 23 and 14 runs respectively.

Philemon Rwothomio also claimed five wickets for Aboojo and, in fact, his return of 5/37 in five overs was more economical. However, Aboojo failed to post a competitive total to capitalise on his effort.

Brian Asaba top-scored for Aboojo with 32, while Amos Ahura and Ivan Thawithemwira added 30 and 19 runs respectively, totals that ultimately fell short of what was required for victory.
