Uganda’s Beach Volleyball team has arrived in Bujumbura, Burundi, ahead of the CAVB Zone V Beach Volleyball Championship, scheduled to run from October 23 to 26.

The team is set to compete in both the men’s and women’s categories, with high hopes of improving on their previous performance.

Head coach and Beach Volleyball Commission leader Edward Bwenje expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, noting that preparations were more robust than in past years.

“This time, our preparations started much earlier compared to previous championships. The team trained intensively for two weeks, and we arrived ready to compete,” Bwenje said.

Training sessions were held at Aerial Beach, with a focus on enhancing performance and strengthening teamwork.

“Our goal was to refine our delivery and ensure we’re cohesive on the court,” Bwenje added.

Uganda is fielding two pairs: Nancy Sombei Chebet and Peace Busingye in the women’s category, and Innocent Ayo and Isaac Ogusul in the men’s category. The delegation is led by Coach Bwenje, with Phoebe Tucungwire serving as Uganda’s official referee at the tournament.

This marks Uganda’s third appearance at the Zone V Beach Volleyball Championship. In the previous edition, the team finished fifth, but this year they are aiming for a top-three finish.

“Our main target is to break into the top three in both categories. We know the competition will be tough, as other countries have also prepared well, but we’re ready to compete,” Bwenje affirmed.

He emphasized the importance of the tournament in providing valuable exposure and learning opportunities for the players.

“This championship is crucial for gaining experience. It allows our players to learn from other teams and improve their game,” he noted.

The CAVB Zone V Championship, organized by the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB), will feature five participating countries: Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, and Sudan.
