Uganda’s athletics team has taken an early lead in the medal standings at this year’s FEASSA Games, currently underway in Kakamega, Kenya.
By Wednesday morning—day two of the competition, Uganda had amassed a total of 23 medals, surpassing Kenya’s 21 and Tanzania’s 7.
The events, held at Eregi Teachers Training College following a venue shift from Bukhungu International Stadium, have drawn athletes from across East Africa, including Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, Uganda, and Kenya.
By the end of day one on Tuesday, Kenya led the medal tally with 22, followed by Uganda with 15 and Tanzania with 5, across both primary and secondary school categories.
This year’s championship has attracted 3,526 athletes: Uganda (1,590), Kenya (1,300), Tanzania (443), Rwanda (162), and Burundi (31).
In the men’s 100m sprint, Uganda’s Daniel Wasike showcased his speed, clocking 10.5 seconds to edge out Kenya’s Brian Okot (10.7). In the women’s 400m, Grace Achola (Uganda) triumphed over Tanzania’s Monica Akullo with a time of 55.6 seconds to Akullo’s 57.7.
Uganda also claimed gold in the women’s shot put, where Brenda Glades Atimango threw 10.57 meters to narrowly beat Kenya’s Prisca Kevin Anena (10.55 meters).
Team manager James Mawa expressed confidence in Uganda’s chances this year.
“It’s our dream to finally win the boys’ title, which Kenya has stubbornly held onto,” Mawa said. “This team was carefully selected during the National Ball Games II and Athletics at St. Peter’s College Tororo. Expectations are high, but I believe our boys and girls are ready to challenge Kenya’s dominance.”
George William Omondi, Assistant Secretary General of the Federation of East African Secondary Schools Sports Associations (FEASSA), emphasized the importance of the ten-day championship.
“These games help identify schools and athletes who will represent East Africa at next year’s ISF World Schools Championships,” he noted. “We’ve seen a significant increase in participation this year.”
The 2025 FEASSA Games are set to conclude this Friday at Bukhungu International Stadium in Kakamega County.
