The third edition of the Makerere Marathon drew over 5,000 runners on Sunday, who braved the challenging hills of Makerere, Naguru, Kololo, and Nakasero in a spirited show of endurance and solidarity.
Francis Tusingwire, a 29-year-old metal fabricator with Jerech Contractors, stole the show by winning the grueling 42km race in a time of 2:37:42. His triumph earned him a medal and a cash prize of sh2m.
“I was a boxer with God’s Father Boxing Club in Nabweru but realized my potential was in running and switched in 2023. I knew I could do better, and today I’ve proved it,” said Tusingwire, who finished third in last year’s 21km event. “My focus now is on the 90km Comrades Marathon in South Africa in 2027. This win motivates me to prepare fully for that.”
The marathon, which featured 42km, 21km, 10km, and 3km races, began and ended at Makerere University’s Freedom Square. Para-athletes took part in the 3km race, further highlighting the event’s inclusive spirit.
Second place went to Ssembogo of the “Fast and Curious” athletics club, who praised the marathon’s cause of supporting disabled students. He also commended the use of an electronic tracking system that ensured transparency in determining winners.
The event was graced by State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, represented by Jacob Okudi, who reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting Makerere. “I confirm to you that the AFCON training ground will be constructed. We did Kyambogo, and Makerere will start in the second quarter of the financial year,” he assured.
Key sponsors included NCBA Bank, MTN, DFCU Bank, and Rwenzori Mineral Water. NCBA Bank CEO, Mark Muyobo, expressed satisfaction that their goal of assisting students with disabilities had been realized, while MTN’s Denis Kabonge pledged continued sponsorship for next year’s edition.
Makerere Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe lauded the sponsors, students, and alumni, crediting the Makerere Endowment Fund for organizing the marathon. Guild President Churchill Ssentamu also saluted students and alumni for their spirited participation.
Proceeds from the marathon will go towards constructing a disability center and providing bursaries for bright but financially disadvantaged students at Makerere University.
