The president of the Association of Uganda University Sport (AUUS), Penina Kabenge, has urged Uganda’s representatives at this year’s Rhine-Ruhr World University Games to make the most of the opportunity as they carry the country’s flag on the international stage.
Kabenge advised the athletes to believe in themselves, stay focused, and enjoy every moment at the Games, regardless of whether they wi,n highlighting that their presence at the event is already a major achievement, earned through dedication and hard work.
“You are not only representing your universities and Uganda, but all the global youth. When you get to Germany, let us embrace the spirit of sportsmanship, friendship, and fair play,” Kabenge said during a pre-departure briefing held at Makerere University on July 9, 2025.
“Give it your all, learn from the experience, and cherish the friendships you make along the way. You worked hard to get here, and it is your hard work that will pay off. When you are there, stay focused because there are many temptations,” she added.
Kabenge, who represented Uganda as a sprinter in similar Games held in Yugoslavia in 1987 and Germany in 1989, encouraged the team to make new friends but warned them against overeating before their events.
“Let us represent very well in terms of discipline, sell Uganda, exchange gifts, and carry some souvenirs. I appeal to you to be good representatives. Represent the country, but take pride in representing yourself very well,” she emphasised.
AUUS treasurer and head of delegation, Paul Mark Kayongo, commended the coaches and players for their commitment during the preparation period, especially given the financial constraints.
He congratulated the athletes on being selected from thousands of potential candidates.
“To make it to one Universiade is a landmark and a chance of a lifetime. It is a great opportunity for you and your families, so make the best out of it. It is your time to shine—take it as a great moment and shine for the country,” Kayongo said.
AUUS general secretary Patrick Ssebuliba briefed the team on the dos and don’ts while abroad and advised them to carry only essential items needed during the Games. He also shared a checklist and urged the athletes to conduct themselves wisely.
“Let us be mindful about our culture and maintain the same while in Germany. Let us also remain focused and avoid distractions,” Ssebuliba cautioned.
Team Uganda is expected to be flagged off on Monday at Makerere University by one of the team’s partners, National Insurance Corporation, which is providing travel insurance. Other partners include Athletics Uganda, the Uganda Tourism Board, Cyclop, FISU, the Uganda Gaming Board, and the Government of Uganda.
