With only a few days in office as the new chief custodian of Commonwealth sport, Dr. Donald Rukare has already set his priorities with unmistakable clarity.

Taking charge just seven months before the 2026 Commonwealth Games scheduled for July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow Scotland, Rukare has made it clear that his first mission is ensuring the Games in Glasgow are a resounding success.

“We want to ensure that Glasgow 2026 gets off to a very strong start next July. Our goal is to deliver the best organized Games yet,” Rukare emphasised.

As the first Ugandan and the first African to hold this prestigious global role, Rukare says the appointment is both humbling and motivating. “It is an honor to serve, and I’m looking forward to working with all our member nations to ensure we shine positively on the world stage,” he said.

He also expressed optimism about Uganda’s participation, noting that he wants to see a united and competitive team in Glasgow. Strengthening the relationship between able-bodied and para sport is a key priority for him.

“How do we build a strong para-sport system in Uganda? I have already held discussions with the Uganda Paralympic Committee to establish a strong domestic partnership,” he revealed.

A Global Vision for Commonwealth Sport

Looking beyond Uganda, Rukare and his team are preparing to roll out a new strategic plan titled Commonwealth Unit, designed to refocus the movement around athlete welfare and long-term sustainability.

“We want these Games to be as athlete centered as possible,” Rukare noted. “We are building a strong pipeline that ensures the Games continue in a predictable and sustainable manner.”

Part of this mission includes using the Commonwealth platform to encourage member governments 74 in total to prioritize sport within their national agendas. Strengthening commercial partnerships and boosting marketing capacity are also high on the list.

Balancing Roles, Driving Impact

In addition to his new international position, Rukare continues to serve as President of the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC), President Africa National Olympic committee of Africa (ANOCA). When asked how he plans to manage both responsibilities effectively, he responded with calm confidence.

“If you want something done, give it to a busy person,” he remarked with a smile. “These roles are not full-time; they are voluntary. We work alongside dedicated full-time staff. My job is to provide guidance, support, and policy leadership.”

Though he acknowledges the challenges ahead, Rukare remains determined and optimistic. With his strategic mindset and unwavering energy, the Commonwealth sports movement enters a new chapter.
