Pombe Stores in Kirinya Bweyogerere has partnered with Kakira Simba Rugby Club ahead of the 2025/2026 rugby season, marking a significant boost for the Jinja-based side as they prepare for their debut in Uganda’s Premiership Rugby League.
Club Director of Rugby, Saedi Atibu, welcomed the partnership, emphasizing the club’s mission to transform Kakira into the home of rugby in Uganda.
“We started with a purpose to grow the sport of rugby in that sugar cane community. We’ve made great strides, but the journey ahead is tough. Making Kakira the true home of rugby in Uganda remains our top priority,” Atibu said during the launch event held at Pombe Stores in Metropolitan Kampala.
Pombe Stores CEO Ronnie Kisakye reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting Kakira Simba Rugby Club, both financially and logistically.
“Beyond financial support, we’re giving the club a home in Kirinya Bweyogerere. When they’re in Kampala, they’ll have a base, a home away from home,” Kisakye stated.
Founded in 2024, Kakira Simba began by training children in primary and secondary schools. Last year, they made a strong impression by reaching the final stages of the National 7s tournament.
Club President Nelson Mandela expressed his ambition to elevate Kakira Simba into one of Uganda’s top rugby clubs.
“We’re committed to growing this club—not just in Jinja, but across Uganda,” Mandela said.
During the launch, the club unveiled its official kit, with replica jerseys priced at sh100,000 and sh365,000. The jerseys, featuring green, black, and yellow, reflect the lush sugar plantations of Kakira. Director of Finance Titus Wambedde noted that proceeds from jersey sales will go directly toward player welfare and support for the Kakira Lionesses, the club’s women’s team.
Wambedde also highlighted the club’s ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility, with outreach programs in schools and communities aimed at building a strong fan base. Mandela praised Kisakye for his continued support and called on other corporate brands to follow Pombe’s example.
To strengthen their squad for the premiership, Kakira Simba has recruited experienced players, including winger Denis Ofoyrwoth and Hakim Wasige from the Hippos. With defending champions Pirates setting the pace, Kakira Simba is gearing up to compete at the highest level.
