Ongwech hits an ace as Ssebugwawo and Atuhaire top the Katogo Golf Series

Only the second-shot position is chosen. If an out-of-bounds ball is picked, those players must return to the tee for their third shot.

Morris Ongwech made a remarkable hole-in-one at the Entebbe Club golf course, bringing excitement to the return of the I&M Bank Katogo Golf Series 2026 on Saturday.

But unlike Berna Musanabera, who last month grabbed CFAO’s sleek Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid after her stunning ace on hole 12, Ongwech hit his on a ‘wrong hole’ (16 instead of 10), where a zero-mileage Mitsubishi Outlander (Sport), courtesy of Victoria Motors and insured by GA Insurance, awaited.

But the sponsors sufficiently rewarded him with a set of four tires, and, as tradition, Entebbe Club chipped in with a Johnnie Walker Black Label bottle and certificate. Using a Ping 6-iron, Ongwech, who was playing alongside Innocent Kihika, Twinemanzi Tumubweinee, and Robbins Mwehaire, hit the ace from 220 yards.

But, Entebbe Club’s Moses Ssebugwawo and Mary Louise Simkins Memorial Golf Course’s Charity Atuhaire returned the lowest net scores (56 and 58 respectively) from the ‘It’s Up to Me’ format, an individual competition making its series debut. In this format, after everyone tees off, one player in each group chooses where they will play their second shot from and decides where the rest of the group must play theirs.

Only the second-shot position is chosen. If an out-of-bounds ball is picked, those players must return to the tee for their third shot. The overall winners walked away with a RwandAir ticket each to a destination of their choice as well as one night's accommodation for (bed and breakfast) at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort.

Ssebugwawo beat Albert Otete to the overall prize on count-back, while Atuhaire edged Phionah Namanya, who won the ladies' Group B with 59 net.

The other individual winners were Edgar Muzahura and Peace Kabasweka, who produced the best gross scores (67 and 70, respectively), as well as Brian Kitimbo (65 nett), Joseph Kimani (66) and Robbins Mwehaire (68) who shone in the men’s Group A. William Otieno (60 nett), Spencer Sabiiti (61), and Brian Manyindo (62 c/b) were the best from Group B, while Otete (56), William Osire (58 c/b), and Innocent Kihika (58) were the top three from Group C.

The best in the ladies’ Group A included Rita Apell (62), Shaminah Nerima (64), and Julia Joan Nampeewo (67), while Phionah Namanya (59), Hasifah Karungi (61 c/b), and Peace Hellen (61) were the best in Group B. Charles Mubiru topped the popular online trivia segment, which runs Monday to Friday before each quarterly event.

The trivia tests golfers’ knowledge of the tournament and its sponsors, with winners receiving bottles of Johnnie Walker Gold Reserve. Mubiru won the overall prize with 95 points as well as winning one of the trivia quizzes.

The other winners were Arthur Arinaitwe, Phionah Namanya, Marvin Kagoro, and Marianne Nkore. The after-party featured lively Caribbean-themed entertainment, with A Pass, a popular artist known for his dancehall hits, as the main act.

The 2026 I&M Bank Katogo Golf Series is supported by Johnnie Walker, Victoria Motors, GA Insurance, RwandAir, Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa, Kampala Serena Hotel, Fenon Events, Goldman’s Luxury, Case Hospital, and Time Cop Security.
