The Assistant Commissioner for Sports in the Ministry of Education and Sports, Sam Odong, has called on the newly elected executive of the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) to focus on practical implementation of their plans.
Odong made the appeal while officiating as chief guest at the handover ceremony held at the AUUS offices in Mengo on Monday afternoon.
During the event, outgoing president Peninah Kabenge officially handed over the instruments of power to president-elect George Wagoogo.
“This association has grown from scratch and we have seen tremendous results. So, put what you have pledged into action and do not just leave it sweet on paper,” Odong emphasized.
He further advised the new leadership to organize a retreat that brings together all stakeholders to plan for the effective implementation of the association’s strategic plan. Odong assured AUUS of the commission’s full support in promoting and developing sports across universities in Uganda.
In his acceptance speech, Wagoogo pledged to serve with integrity and create an environment where athletes can compete fairly and nurture their talents.
“Protecting the rights and welfare of all athletes, including persons with disabilities, will be at the top of my agenda,” Wagoogo said. “I will promote teamwork throughout my tenure, but most importantly, I will seek more sponsorship to sustain our activities.”
He also committed to strengthening partnerships with the National Council of Sports, Uganda Olympic Committee, FASU, the Ministry of Education and Sports, and other national and international organizations.
Kabenge, in her farewell remarks, urged Wagoogo to prioritize improving university sports infrastructure and facilities.
“Enhance the visibility of AUUS, introduce more disciplines, improve governance and compliance, and secure a permanent home for the association,” she advised.
She also encouraged the new executive to fully implement the five-year strategic plan (2025–2029), which was developed earlier this year in Soroti.
The new AUUS executive will officially begin its tenure with the upcoming AUUS Games, scheduled for December 18–23 at Uganda Christian University in Mukono.
