Nemostars fall to APR in Mens’ Africa Club Championship

The Ugandan side found the going tough in a partisan BK Arena and were left chasing shadows as APR’s middle block proved superior in the top-of-the-table clash, which ended 3–0 (25–20, 25–23, 27–25) past midnight local time.

Nemostars suffered a devastating late-night loss to Rwanda’s APR, registering their first defeat at the Volleyball Men’s Africa Club Championship currently taking place in Rwanda.

The Ugandan side found the going tough in a partisan BK Arena and were left chasing shadows as APR’s middle block proved superior in the top-of-the-table clash, which ended 3–0 (25–20, 25–23, 27–25) past midnight local time.

Nemostars started well in all three sets but found it hard to navigate the middle phases, which were controlled by APR, who were more consistent on serve.

For many members of the Nemostars squad, this was the kind of atmosphere they should have thrived in, but they were unfortunately unable to tie up loose ends.

“The atmosphere was good, and it was the kind of environment we want to play in,” stated Nemostars deputy captain Smith Okumu.

While there was disappointment for Nemostars late in the third set, with APR on match point and eventually sealing the match in straight sets, coach Godfrey Okumu Owese refused to attribute the loss to officiating decisions.

“I believe both sides were complaining about the same calls. I will say this: the referees are also human. Even if we had challenges in these preliminary matches, I believe they did their job, and on behalf of my team, they did it to the best of their ability. I hope in the next few games our team can perform better and deliver an improved performance,” Okumu stated.

Nemostars will be back in action later Sunday evening with a big match against Zimbabwe’s Black Rhinos.
