Nemostars and Sport-S have advanced to the round of 16 of the Men’s Africa Volleyball Championship following impressive victories on Monday.
Sport-S had to fight within an inch of their lives to advance past Cameroonian outfit CSV, securing a gritty 3-2 victory (25-23, 19-25, 28-30, 26-24, 15-10).
Later in the night, Nemostars proved consistent as they laid siege to another Cameroonian side, Litto Team Volleyball, handing them a decisive 3-0 defeat (25-21, 25-16, 25-21).
Nemostars also rose to the top of Group A after Petrojet of Egypt defeated APR 3-0. That result pushed Nemostars, who had beaten Petrojet on the opening day, to the summit of the group. They will now face Kenyan side KPA in the round of 16.
For Nemostars coach Geoffrey Okumu Owese, the achievement was the culmination of their hard work.
“I am just here as a bandleader; they deserve all the congratulations. They are the ones playing all the music,” Okumu said.
It has been a long time coming for Nemostars, who have competed in many African Championships, but this is the first time they have topped a group—a testament to their consistency at this level.
Sport-S, meanwhile, have put together a series of gritty performances, including a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Ivorian side INJS (29-27, 25-18, 18-25, 19-25, 16-18).
With their third victory on Monday, they secured a place in the round of 16, where they will face Rwandan side REG. The concern for Sport-S, however, is the amount of energy they have expended in securing these wins, which could ultimately hurt their chances in the knockout stage.
