Makerere University Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe has welcomed the redevelopment of the university's sports pitch, which has been designated as a training ground for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Uganda will co-host the tournament alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

The project, which aligns with Makerere’s vision of promoting sports excellence, was officially launched with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the university and the National Council of Sports (NCS) on Wednesday.

"This upgrade will not only serve AFCON teams but also benefit our students and sports enthusiasts for years to come," Nawangwe stated.

The first phase of construction, estimated at Shs25 billion, will include:

A FIFA-standard football and rugby pitch

An eight-lane athletics track

Spectator stands

Floodlights for day and night training

Nawangwe noted that the AFCON project complements Makerere’s existing Shs100 billion sports complex plan, reducing the funding needed from other sources.

State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang confirmed that the government will fully fund the project, with the UPDF Engineering Brigade leading construction—a directive from President Museveni.

"The UPDF has proven its capability through projects like Namboole Stadium and Wankulukuku. They will work with Support in Sports (SIS) to ensure CAF standards are met," Ogwang said.

NCS Chairman Ambrose Tashobya emphasized the strict timeline, stating, "With all funds secured, we will deliver this facility on schedule to meet CAF requirements."

The Makerere facility becomes Uganda’s fourth confirmed AFCON training venue, joining Namboole Stadium’s outer pitch, Kyambogo University’s ongoing project, and the Kadiba facility. Construction begins next week upon contract signing.

The MoU signing was witnessed by NCS General Secretary Bernard Ogwel and Makerere University’s Secretary.
