Gomba Ssaza FC has made a strong statement in the transfer market, unveiling a seasoned coaching staff and key player signings just two weeks before the highly anticipated 2024 Masaza Cup kicks off.
As the tournament’s most decorated team with five titles (2004, 2009, 2014, 2017, and 2020), Gomba has once again set the pace by being the first among the 18 participating teams to announce their technical bench.
Heading the technical team is renowned coach Simon Dungu, popularly known as ‘Ddunga,’ who led Buddu to their third title last year with a 1-0 win over Kyaggwe in the final at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
Dungu boasts an impeccable Masaza Cup final record, having won all three he has contested—with Gomba in 2017, Mawokota in 2013, and Buddu in 2023.
He will be assisted by Simon Gitta and Edgar Bwogi, with Jamada Magaasi appointed as goalkeeping coach and Tonny Kawuki as the kits manager. Dungu brings with him vast experience from coaching Mawokota (2013, 2019), Gomba (2017), Buddu (2018, 2023), and Ssingo (2021, 2023).
To bolster their title ambitions, Gomba has secured the services of several high-profile players. These include last season’s top scorer Robert Ssewanyana from Buluuli FC, veteran goalkeeper Julius Ssenyonjo from Ssingo, and former Mawokota captain Micheal Abura.
Newly appointed Gomba chairperson Andrew Musasizi emphasized the team’s determination to reclaim glory after a disappointing group-stage exit last season. He highlighted the pressure from Kabaka’s chief, Fredrick William Mugabi (the Kitunzi), and the wider chiefdom to deliver results.
“We are focused on winning our sixth title. No excuses will be tolerated—we’ve provided all necessary resources for the coaching and technical team to succeed,” Musasizi stated.
The 2024 Masaza Cup season will officially kick off on June 21, with a thrilling opener between defending champions Buddu and record holders Gomba at the Kitovu playground in Greater Masaka.
