Malcom Gift Tabula, better known on the track as Gift Ssebuguzi, is determined to reclaim his place among Africa’s motocross elite.

After a disappointing outing at the FIM Africa Motocross of Nations (MXoAN) in Harare, Zimbabwe, last August, the young Ugandan rider has been busy retooling and refocusing for the new season.

The 19‑year‑old sensation has experienced mixed fortunes since graduating to the MX 125cc category in 2024. His rise had seemed unstoppable after clinching the MX 85cc title at the 2022 MXoAN, where he was crowned Africa’s number one. Yet recent results have fallen short of expectations, leaving him hungry for redemption.

In an exclusive interview with Vision Sport, Gift revealed that his father, seasoned national rally driver Ronald Ssebuguzi has invested in a new high‑performance motorbike. The upgrade will allow him to compete in both the MX 125cc and MX 2 categories this season.

“This year I’m adopting a dual‑category approach,” Gift explained. “With my skills, experience, and determination, I’m confident of securing a podium finish  and at the very least, a win in one of the classes. By the time the MXoAN in Namibia arrives, I’ll be primed to deliver a winning performance.”

Gift was quick to acknowledge the role of his father in his journey.

“I often question my resolve, feeling exhausted by the demands of motocross,” he admitted. “But my dad is a pillar of strength, urging me to persevere. He understands the sacrifices, the grueling training, the pressure to perform, and the balance between academics and athletics. His faith in me is what drives me forward.”

Ronald Ssebuguzi has been instrumental in his son’s career, ensuring he has the best equipment and encouragement at every stage.

“I want to make my dad and family proud,” Gift emphasized. “Locally, I’ve proven myself. Now it’s time to take on the continent and bring home the gold.”

Gift’s dedication has already earned him accolades. At the Federation of Motor Sport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) Annual Awards, he scooped five honors, including the 2023 MX 85cc winner, the 2024 and 2025 MX 125cc overall champion, and the Most Entertaining Rider of 2025.

Uganda, meanwhile, finished third overall at the 2025 MXoAN in Harare with 284 points, behind Zimbabwe (468 points) and champions South Africa (717 points).

With Gift’s renewed focus and the team’s growing strength, hopes are high for an even stronger showing in Namibia.
