Gideon Onyango is a man on a mission after being declared the new chairman of the Pool Association of Uganda during the elective assembly held on Saturday at Pope Paul VI Hotel in Rubaga.
“Before we get to the bottom line of what we want to achieve, PAU needs restructuring and this is going to require the input of various stakeholders. We are going to sit down and come up with a plan,” stated Onyango, who takes office alongside Yusuf Meyan Magomu.
Onyango replaces Bob Trubish, who has been at the helm for the last eight years. Trubish made the decision to step down from leading the sport so that others could have the opportunity to take it forward.
Trubish is the longest-serving chairman in the sport’s history and hopes to see the game reach even greater heights under Onyango’s leadership. Among his achievements was helping to introduce a women’s category in the National Open.
He was also tasked with steering the sport through a period of uncertainty during a power struggle, as well as through the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We have now held it for three years in a row. I would also like to see the sport also attract more sponsors,” stated Trubish.
Rogers Ssemanda will take over as General Secretary from Paul Wasike. Meanwhile, the controversial Wasswa Kayiiya defeated incumbent Donald Ampumuza and Ismail Kalibbala in the race for Technical Director.
George Katongole returns as Director of Public Relations after defeating Jondu Emmy by 43–31 votes.
Fauzah Namuganza also returns to the executive as Clubs Representative, while Debborah Ibenu retained her position as Director of Women’s Affairs. Treasurer Cosmas Ssegawa and Pius Mugambwa, Head of Schools and Institutions, were both unopposed.
