Uganda’s top weightlifter Davis Niyoyita has set ambitious targets for the 2026 season, aiming to secure at least two medals from both continental and international competitions.

The experienced lifter has identified two major events as his key focus this year the Africa Weightlifting Championships scheduled for May in Ismailia, Egypt, and the Commonwealth Games due in July in Glasgow, Scotland.

Both competitions present an opportunity for Niyoyita to test himself against the continent’s elite and make a strong statement on the global stage.

Before turning his attention to international duties, Niyoyita must first prove his readiness at home. He is expected to feature in the National Weightlifting Championships slated for February 15, 2026, where selection for the major competitions will be determined.

Training at Kisugu Unified Gym, Niyoyita says preparations are going well as he intensifies his program to meet the demands of a highly competitive season.

“I am training very hard because I know what I want to achieve this year,” Niyoyita said. “Last season was not easy, but I believe this year will be better and more successful for me.”

A change in weight category has added a new challenge to his campaign. Niyoyita will compete in the 60kg division, which he admits is one of the most competitive classes in the sport.

“I have to put up a strong performance first at the nationals,” he explained. “The 60 kg category is very competitive, but with my experience and discipline in training, I am confident I can emerge victorious.”

If he maintains his current form and avoids injury, Niyoyita stands a strong chance of achieving his goals and adding to Uganda’s medal tally on the continental and international stage in 2026.
