HELSINKI - Finland's ski jumping head coach Igor Medved has been sent home from the Winter Olympics for violating the team's rules relating to "alcohol consumption", the Finnish Olympic Committee said Thursday.

The head of the Nordic country's Olympic team, Janne Hanninen, would not be drawn on details.

"We do not have zero tolerance for alcohol. Of course, there is zero tolerance in the jump tower and during coaching, but other than that, there is no zero tolerance," Hanninen told AFP.

The incident did not occur "in coaching situations", he stressed.

In a statement from the Finnish Olympic Committee, Medved said he "was very sorry" about what had happened.

"I want to apologise to the entire Finnish team, the athletes, and also the fans," he said.

"I hope the team can focus on the competition and continue their good work. I will not comment further on the matter," he added.

Lasse Moilanen will now take over as coach of Finland's ski jumping team.

Medved is a Slovenian national and has served as the head coach of the Finnish team since the 2024-2025 season.
