Why Kyagulanyi failed to campaign in Karamoja's Karenga

“We are told that people are still packed in the streets and trading centres at night waiting for us, but we are not going to speak to them tonight because we must observe the rules,” Kyagulanyi noted.

KARENGA - National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has failed to campaign in Karamoja district-based Karenga district.

The Opposition leader, who accuses the Government of neglect of the region, says he is concerned over the poor state of infrastructure and widespread poverty in Karamoja.

“It’s only 70 kilometres from where we started, but as you can see, we have failed to make it because of the state of the roads,” Kyagulanyi said.

Kyagulanyi said he had been informed by his advance team that large crowds had gathered in Karenga Town waiting for him, but he was unable to address them because of the Electoral Commission’s campaign regulations, which prohibit rallies beyond 6:00pm. (All Photos by Richard Sanya)

He was speaking to journalists on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, evening while stranded between Kapedo and Karenga.

Kyagulanyi said his campaign team had been unable to reach Karenga Town, the venue of their second rally, because of what he termed the deplorable condition of the roads.

Funding challenges

The NUP leader thanked supporters across the country for funding his campaign after he said the Government cut off access to their official campaign funds.

“Ordinary Ugandans are funding this campaign. We are grateful to all those who continue to support us in their different capacities,” he said.

Kyagulanyi said he had been informed by his advance team that large crowds had gathered in Karenga Town waiting for him, but he was unable to address them because of the Electoral Commission’s campaign regulations, which prohibit rallies beyond 6:00pm.

“We are told that people are still packed in the streets and trading centres at night waiting for us, but we are not going to speak to them tonight because we must observe the rules,” he noted.

He added that his team planned to spend the night in Karenga before continuing their campaign trail in  Kitgum and Lamwo on Thursday.

Kyagulanyi has been traversing northern Uganda as part of his presidential campaign, promising to improve infrastructure, healthcare, and education in marginalised regions like Karamoja if elected.
