The Won Nyaci (Lango paramount chief), Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune, has issued a passionate appeal to Lango region residents to uphold peace and reject all forms of violence as the country prepares for the upcoming general elections.
Speaking during a high-level security meeting at his palace in Senior Quarters, Lira city, Okune said his primary vision is to see the region elect its leaders in a lawful and orderly manner. The meeting was attended by top security officials and regional administrators.
"My desire is for the people of Lango to be fully prepared to elect leaders for the next five years without chaos or bloodshed," the Won Nyaci said.
He urged local leaders to work closely with both the Government and cultural institutions to ensure that the region’s development needs are met.
Digital safeguards for youth
Okune said there is a need for synergy between security agencies and cultural leaders in sensitising the public about peaceful coexistence.
He urged the Government to strengthen child protection laws, citing Australia’s recent move to restrict electronic device usage for children under 16. He suggested that Uganda should consider similar safeguards to protect the youth from digital risks and misinformation during the election period.
Okune said unity is important and urged communities to resolve land disputes and cultural disagreements through reconciliation rather than allowing them to escalate into hatred or physical confrontation.
Government response
Alice Akello, the Commissioner in the Office of the President in charge of resident city and district commissioners (RDCs) and RCCs, commended the Lango security team for their success in preventing election-related disturbances in the past.
However, Akello said poverty and hunger remain significant challenges, contributing to high school dropout rates in the region. She urged leaders to prioritise educational opportunities for the children of Lango to break the cycle of poverty.
Security boost
On the security front, North Kyoga Police region commander Wesley Nganizi, assured the public that the force is fully prepared to maintain order.
He revealed that 40 additional police officers have been deployed to every district across Lango to bolster community security.
"Our preparedness must be continuous. We will also deploy specially trained election constables during the campaign and voting period to ensure a peaceful process," Nganizi said.
Warning against intolerance
Lira Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Lilian Eyal warned political actors against physical assaults and intimidation. She revealed that her office had received reports of attacks on NRM supporters by members of Opposition parties in Lira district.
"We will take firm action against anyone found disrupting the peace. Violence has no place in our electoral process," Eyal cautioned.
