The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party elections dispute tribunal has dismissed a petition filed by Opua Alex Emungasi challenging the victory of Fredrick Angura in the party's primary elections.
Angura, the Tororo South County MP, garnered 19,618 votes, defeating Emungasi, who received 5,773 votes, creating a margin of 13,846 votes.
In his petition, Emungasi cited irregularities including intimidation, non-compliance with electoral regulations, and bribery.
He sought nullification of results, a declaration that he was the rightful winner of the elections, an order for fresh elections, and any other appropriate relief.
He based his arguments on affidavits presented by Moses Emorut, Samson Emukule, John Ekirapa, Joseph Emojong, and a video recording.
On his part, Angura opposed the petition and defended his declaration as the duly elected NRM flag bearer. He denied all the allegations presented by the petitioner.
He argued that the claims of bribery, intimidation, violence, and fabrication of voter registers were unsubstantiated, gazetted, and intended to discredit the lawful process.
Angura maintained that any irregularities that occurred were minor, isolated, and did not affect the outcome of the elections.
The panel, consisting of John Musiime, the chairperson of the NRM election dispute tribunal, Martin Mbanza Kalemera, the head of the panel, and members Kenneth Kipaala and Deborah Nshamereirwe, after thorough examination of the petition, dismissed it due to lack of sufficient evidence.
The panel upheld the declaration of Hon Angura as the duly elected flag bearer for Tororo South County.
